About the office of political and diplomatic affairs
Rooted in the legacy of Eritrea’s ancestors and martyrs — committed to safeguarding the nation and its ongoing pursuit of self-determination — the Office of Political and Diplomatic Affairs (OPDA) leads with three guiding pillars:
Unity. Humility. Purpose.
Through principled diplomacy and narratives grounded in fact, OPDA works to advance Eritrea’s strategic interests, reinforce bilateral partnerships, and articulate the country’s political vision and policies to Western governments and diasporic communities.
Eritrea, uniquely positioned on the Red Sea coast in the Horn of Africa, has a rich and resilient history. The country overcame a 30-year war for liberation, defeating one of Africa’s largest and most heavily backed armies to secure independence in 1991. This followed centuries of foreign rule and occupation, from Ottoman and Egyptian control to Italian colonization and British administration. (Two years after independence, Eritrea was officially admitted as a member state of the United Nations.)
Today, OPDA strives to showcase Eritrea’s political, diplomatic, and economic potential; expand collaboration with key government stakeholders; and provide timely news analysis and insights through journals and other publications. OPDA remains dedicated to protecting Eritrea’s national interests and strengthening relationships — particularly with the United States — through strategic engagement, transparency, and mutual respect.

Merih Press is the media and communications platform of the Office of Political and Diplomatic Affairs (OPDA). We produce timely analysis, policy-focused reporting, and strategic commentary that contextualizes Eritrea’s position in regional and global affairs, counters misinformation, and strengthens diplomatic literacy among Eritreans worldwide.
